Scale Operator

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, is responsible for weighing, measuring, and generating appropriate and accurate documentation of all incoming and outgoing materials and overseeing deliveries to prevent unacceptable and hazardous waste from entering the facility.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential functions may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Performs responsible accounting and clerical work, including the compilation of spreadsheets and financial documents.
  2. Performs essential administrative and clerical duties necessary for the efficient operation of commission facilities.
  3. Assures and maintains an exceptional level of customer service to all customers and visitors of commission facilities.
  4. Screens telephone calls, receives visitors, and schedules appointments.
  5. Communicates directly with scale customers and answers citizens’ inquiries regarding Commission Facility operations and rules. Follows and informs customers of safety protocols and ensures compliance with regulations.
  6. Handles customer payments, responsible for collecting payments from scale customers and billing business customers.
  7. Operates computerized scale for weighing materials and completes appropriate and accurate documentation. Including recording weights, vehicle information, and other relevant data. Ensures accurate records of materials being moved into the facility.
  8. Communicate effectively and efficiently with fellow team members regarding material movement and operational changes using the CB Radio.
  9. Monitors CB radio and phone for incoming/outgoing traffic updates and alerts.
  10. Checks material loads for proper handling, covering, and contents and directs haulers and the general public to appropriate areas to deposit material.
  11. Establishes and maintains office filing system for related documents and records.  
  12. Understands Commission public education programs and provides information and appropriate guidance and resources to officials, customers, and the general public.
  13. Performs general housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness and organization of the office to promote efficiencies and safety.
  14. Adheres to office cleanliness, 5S organizational systems, and standard work procedures while maintaining a vision for continuous improvement.
  15. Perform other job-related duties as needed and/or assigned.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
  • Associates degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year College or technical school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Knowledge of:
  • Work policies, procedures, operations, and health and safety plans.
  • Environmental Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) policy and what it means to the Commission. Understand how the position and job responsibilities impact the environment and what can be done to improve them. Recommends improvements to the EMS Core Team or Commission Management in cases where the authority does not reside within this position to make the improvements.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, officials, and the general public.
  • Competencies in Microsoft Office, including Outlook and Excel.
  • Must pass post-offer physical and background check.
 
 
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Certification Requirements:
  • Preferred certification in Red Cross CPR and safety training.
Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and talk or hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 5 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Must occasionally utilize personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and safety shoes
Working Environment:
  • Routine exposure to moderate background noise. (i.e., telephone ringing, two-way radio broadcast, and office equipment, often simultaneously).
  • Occasional non-regular work hours, which include a Saturday and Holiday rotation schedule. 
  • Required to briefly work outdoors throughout the year on a daily basis with exposure to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
